Tech Topic Connection

Most IT careers are deeply connected to the fundamentals of computers and technology. IT professionals need to understand hardware, including processors, memory, storage devices, and networking equipment, to build and maintain systems. Software proficiency is crucial, as many roles require expertise in applications, operating systems, and programming languages for development and troubleshooting. Networking knowledge is essential for understanding data transmission, configurations, and security protocols. Problem-solving skills are vital for diagnosing and fixing technical issues, while cybersecurity knowledge helps protect data and systems from threats. Data management skills are important for working with databases and analytics. Additionally, innovation and development in IT require a deep understanding of computer science and engineering principles. Overall, these fundamentals provide the essential knowledge and skills needed for various IT roles, from support and administration to...

Network Security

Ping commands can be used for attacks that mess with network services. For example, the Ping of Death sends oversized ping packets to a target system, causing it to crash or act weird (What Is a Ping of Death and Ping of Death Attack? | Fortinet, 2023). Another attack is a Ping Flood, where a system gets bombarded with a ton of ping requests, leading to a denial of service. Modern systems usually have protection, but older or unpatched ones can still be at risk. A computer virus is a nasty piece of software that spreads by attaching itself to files or programs. When you run an infected file, the virus activates and can delete files, steal personal info, or slow down your system. To protect your computer, use antivirus software and be careful about downloading files or clicking on links from unknown sources. Phishing is an online scam where attackers try to trick you into giving them personal info, like passwords or credit card numbers (What Is a Phishing Attack?, 2023). They ofte...

Computers in the Workplace

Computers are super important in banking, making everything easier and faster. With online banking, you can check your account, transfer money, and pay bills from anywhere. ATMs use computers to let you get cash, deposit money, and check balances without going to the bank. Computers help bank staff give better service by quickly pulling up your account info. They also keep an eye on transactions to catch any fraud. Loan applications go through faster because computers handle credit checks and risk assessments. Mobile banking apps let you manage your account and make payments on your phone. Banks use computers to securely store and manage your data. They also offer online tools to help you budget and save money. Overall, computers make banking more convenient, secure, and efficient.  Bank employees need to know how to use computers for a few reasons. Most of their tasks, like checking accounts and processing transactions, are done on computers, so being comfortable with them ...

Traveling Through a Network

Image
When you use the ping command, your computer sends a small data packet to a target IP address and waits for a response. This helps measure how long it takes for the packet to travel to the target and back, showing the network's latency. With traceroute, your computer sends packets with a Time-To-Live value that increases with each set of packets. Each router the packet passes through decreases the TTL by 1. When the TTL hits 0, the router sends a message back to your computer. This process helps map the path the packets take through the network, showing each hop and the time it takes to reach them. In short, ping checks if a device is reachable and measures travel time, while traceroute shows the path packets take through the network.  When you use the ping command to test websites from different countries, you'll see different response times. Websites closer to you usually respond faster because the data has a shorter distance to travel.  With traceroute, you can see t...

Documenting a Day

Utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint were all very simple and easy to use. I would say I had the easiest time using Word because I had the most experience with it and PowerPoint because of how intuitive and easy to use Microsoft has made it. The functions of Microsoft Word make it very easy to achieve whatever type of formatting you want. Everything is clear and there is even a search bar to help with finding an option that you cannot locate. Everything is refined and after using it for so many years, I have become extremely familiar with Microsoft Word. Microsoft Excel is something that I haven’t used too much. I took a brief course to go over the basics over a year ago, so I was familiar with the basic instructions the assignment made me do. There is still lots of options that I am not familiar with but I look forward to learning more in the future. I cannot really give a good opinion on using Microsoft Excel because I am just unfamiliar with it, but from a beginners ...

Web/Mobile App Critique

The website I'll be reviewing is Amazon.com. Amazon is a website that is used as an online marketplace to purchase almost anything. My family and I use Amazon, and I find it extremely useful and easy to use sometimes. It has come in handy during the holiday season, as my family and I have used it to buy most of our holiday gifts. Overall, the website's design isn't exactly too pleasing to look at, but it is pretty straightforward. I believe it could be a lot simpler, but it is still decently easy to use and navigate. I think those who aren't as tech-savvy would find it a little challenging to set up an account, add things to their cart, and add their payment info to ultimately complete a purchase. Me as someone who has grown up and used computers their entire life, I found it simple, but if I were to let my older relatives try to use Amazon, I think they would struggle.  In my opinion, the home page of Amazon has too much going on. It is overwhelming to look at, which...

Programming Languages

https://scratch.mit.edu/projects/1109009038 This assignment was my first time using Scratch and my first experience with programming. It seemed pretty easy, but I needed the tutorial to understand how it worked. Since I was new to programming, I was a bit confused at first. I read each block and tried to think of something to program. One challenge was deciding what to make because there were so many options. It took me longer to decide than to actually program. Once I chose the blocks and direction, it got easier. I learned that programming lets you control everything about what you're making. With Scratch, I had full creative control. Comparing Scratch to the activities in our text, Scratch is much simpler. In the text, I had to write the codes and do the math myself. With Scratch, the codes were ready, and I just had to drag and drop them. The introduction to Python in the text seemed more complicated than Scratch. Even though Python is known as an easy language to learn, it fe...

About me

Hello everyone! My name is Joe Salinas. I am a 23-year-old full-time banker and part time college student from Los Angeles, born and raised. During the day I work at a bank as a banker, helping clients with consumer banking needs. After work I am pursuing my bachelor’s degree in computer information technology. My father used to own his own electronic repair shop, and I would come to work with him after school and during summers when I was younger. That really sparked my interest in technology as I was surrounded by it at a young age. I would eventually go on to help him with his repairs and do some on my own. My interest in video games also helped as I would go on to build multiple computers by myself. I never had really thought about pursuing a career in technology, even though I was surrounded by it my entire life. What pushed me to pursue my degree was something my father had told me. He inspired me to find out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life and to pursue a career in ...
